House told criminals swelling alien tide

From the Washington Times

Most of the people who sneak across the border are no longer good people in search of honest work, the sheriff of a border county in Texas told a House subcommittee yesterday, but rather criminals who belong to gangs and drug cartels.

”For years we have seen individuals enter the country illegally,” said Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr., sheriff of Zapata County. “However, recently we feel that many of these persons are no longer entering the country to look for legitimate employment. We are now seeing that many of these persons are members of ruthless and violent gangs.”

Sheriff Gonzalez’s testimony before the House International Relations subcommittee was part of a series of “field hearings” held across the country to gauge voter opinion on reforming the nation’s immigration laws. Yesterday’s hearing was held in Laredo, in Zapata County.

”Some areas can accurately be described as a war zone,” panel Chairman Ed Royce, California Republican, told The Washington Times after touring the border near Laredo.

Sheriff Gonzalez told members of the subcommittee that the number of illegal aliens from places other than Mexico — including countries on terrorist watch lists — caught crossing the border has more than quintupled in the past four years. Increasingly, he said, they try blending in to look like Mexicans crossing the border in search of honest work.

This clearly illustrates that the illegal immigration issue is not just a matter of workers from other countries doing jobs Americans won’t do, but as the Sheriff points out, a growing number of those crossing the border are not doing it to get jobs. Many of those who favor the Senate version of the “Comprehensive Shamnesty Bill” feel that these “hearings” are nothing but politics.

Rep. Silvestre Reyes, Texas Democrat, said the hearings were about politics, not policy.  ”Congress needs to get back to work in Washington to reach a compromise agreement on comprehensive border security and immigration reform legislation,” Mr. Reyes said.

Congressman Reyes needs to understand this is not a Political issue but a National Security Issue. If these hearings allow congress to better inform themselves of the necessity for and the emphasis needed on border security then these hearings is where they need to be. There are several issues that should always be above politics, and National Security is at the top of that list. Politicians on both sides of the aisle need to put the politics aside and commit themselves to securing our borders.

Chambliss, tag illegal hiring — not citizenship

10 07 2006

Cross posted from DeMediacratic Nation

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has an article describing the hypocrisy of Saxby Chambliss of Georgia. This article has it’s merits as far as two-faced political stances are concerned, but it loses me when those in favor of stronger/stiffer illegal immigration reform are labled as “ultra-conservative.” According to author Cynthia Tucker of the AJC:

Here’s the secret: Chambliss and his ilk know they can gain a few points with their ultraconservative base by playing to its nativism.

Is that what it all really boils down to? Only the “ultraconservative base” is interested in taking a tough stance on immigration?

Tucker attacks the tactics of Chambliss, yet the tactics of Chambliss are the tactics of politicians; especially with regard to immigration. We’ve been screaming about immigration reform, when what really needs reforming is the enforcement of the laws already on the books. This is neither Republican nor Democrat; this is politics as usual, yet people like Tucker are going to make it a battle of good against evil. Guess who plays the role of “evil,” yup…us “ultraconservatives.”

According the AJC it’s a conspiracy (my choice of words):

Many will remain here, desperate for any work they can get. They won’t be in a position to protest low wages or unsafe working conditions. They’ll remain available to farmers and poultry processors and construction contractors. And to upper-middle-class couples who need nannies and cooks and lawn care.

Then there is also the inherent racism of us whites:

targeting illegal workers while protecting illegal hiring — is aided and abetted by constituents who find it easier to blame darker-skinned Latinos than white business owners.

I would think that most of us take what our politicians say with a grain of salt, so it would be nice if we could get a more honest view the media that claims to hold the highground on truth.

I’m fully aware of Chambliss wanting it both ways, but it isn’t, as I said something that isn’t on the books already. Bottom line, if we were allowed to actually do something about this issue without being labled as “insensitive,” or “racist,” but that isn’t going to happen, because even people without legal rights, have rights.

Finally, according to Ms. Tucker of the AJC:

If Chambliss & Co. really wanted to stanch the flow of undocumented workers, that would be easy enough to do. We wouldn’t have to build a a single mile of fence or hire even one more Border Patrol agent. If Congress cracked down on illegal hiring — passing a tough law that sent a few criminal employers to jail — the practice would end. The waves of illegal immigrants would dry up. If they couldn’t get work, they wouldn’t come.

See how easy it would be?

Fla. cities propose laws on Illegal Immigrants

10 07 2006

Cross posted from Morning Coffee

Some Florida cities are not waiting for a national answer on what to do about illegal immigration, and are planning to vote this month on proposed local laws dealing with undocumented immigrants.

In Brevard County, the Palm Bay Council will consider a fine for businesses that hire workers without legal residency status.

In Highlands County, officials in Avon Park are considering banning undocumented immigrants from renting houses, as well as fines for businesses. Avon Park, where nearly one in five residents is Hispanic, is also considering requiring all city documents and other communications be only in English.

‘’Since there’s a stalemate on any kind of (federal) reform, someone has to pick up the ball for constituents,’’ Palm Bay Councilman Andy Anderson told The Tampa Tribune. His proposal would levy a $200 fine on businesses in the city that hire undocumented workers.

Palm Bay and Avon Park are modeling their proposed laws after similar measures in Hazelton, Pa., which gained national attention for its own crackdown on illegal immigration.

Full Story here

The Senate and House are holding public “hearings” around the country discussing illegal immigration. NYC Mayor Bloomberg was invited to speak at one last week in Philadelphia. Perhaps inviting the mayors of some of these smaller communities should also be considered.

Mexico works to bar Non-Natives from Jobs

10 07 2006

Cross posted from The Uncooperative Blogger

Mexico has the nerve to call us Xenophobic and racist, well read this and decide for yourselves who is the racist country.

From The Mercury News:

In the United States, only two posts - the presidency and vice presidency - are reserved for the native born.

In Mexico, non-natives are banned from those and thousands of other jobs, even if they are legal, naturalized citizens.

Foreign-born Mexicans can’t hold seats in either house of the congress. They’re also banned from state legislatures, the Supreme Court and all governorships. Many states ban foreign-born Mexicans from spots on town councils. And Mexico’s Constitution reserves almost all federal posts, and any position in the military and merchant marine, for “native-born Mexicans.”

Recently the Mexican government has gone even further. Since at least 2003, it has encouraged cities to ban non-natives from such local jobs as firefighters, police and judges.

Mexico’s Interior Department - which recommended the bans as part of “model” city statutes it distributed to local officials - could cite no basis for extending the bans to local posts.

After being contacted by The Associated Press about the issue, officials changed the wording in two statutes to delete the “native-born” requirements, although they said the modifications had nothing to do with AP’s inquiries.

“These statutes have been under review for some time, and they have, or are about to be, changed,” said an Interior Department official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name.

But because the “model” statues are fill-in-the-blanks guides for framing local legislation, many cities across Mexico have already enacted such bans. They have done so even though foreigners constitute a tiny percentage of the population and pose little threat to Mexico’s job market.

The foreign-born make up just 0.5 percent of Mexico’s 105 million people, compared with about 13 percent in the United States, which has a total population of 299 million. Mexico grants citizenship to about 3,000 people a year, compared to the U.S. average of almost a half million.

They have the nerve to get involved in our politics about illegal aliens? We are not talking illegal aliens in Mexico people. This is Mexican citizens, and it is worse than even this article shows. The darker skinned Mexicans are also discriminated against in Mexico.

Typical “Praise” From the Clinton Kahuna …

10 07 2006

Cross Posted From Red Hot Cuppa Politics

Well, looks like our peerless ex-President Clinton, (on break from his busy schedule of running around the world, apologizing for America’s existance) has (sort of) praised Bush for bringing up the immigration issue.

From FoxNews:

LOS ANGELES — Former President Bill Clinton praised President Bush on Saturday for supporting reforms that would allow millions of illegal immigrants to seek citizenship but said the debate in Congress is being fomented by Republicans who want to divide America.

“I’m proud of him for doing it and I thanked him for doing it,”he said of Bush during a”Cafe con Clinton”breakfast speech to the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights advocacy group

Ooops! Notice the “debate … being fomented by Republicans who want to divide America” thingie.

“…Clinton also argued that the nation’s government is controlled by Republican ideological hard-liners who want to use immigration to divide Americans and distract them from issues such as the war in Iraq and the health care crisis.

Instead of equal opportunity, they support a”financial elite”because they favor”concentrated wealth and power,”Clinton said.

“They believe in a government that is secret, unaccountable and that maximizes its own power,”he said.”They really believe the world works better if they run it and we keep our mouths shut.”

Of course, “keeping his mouth shut” was never an issue for Bill — particularly since there seems to be at least two sides of his mouth from which to speak.

Click to the CoalitionBlog for the latest and freshest on illegal immigration. ChristiKing says “Not!” to Si, Se Punde. Darrell picked up on an article about how Social Security helps track down illegal immigrants (who’duh thunk it!) Tom passed on an article about how a Dallas hospital wants to bill Mexico to help defray the costs of treating Mexican citizens. (And congratulations

to Tom for getting his own newspaper column!) Finally, Rev. Brian Bonner has his own weekend show on WideAwakesRadio … which is now on the air, although I think they’re still having a few tech problems. Look for the “listen live” button.
