Immigrant labor “dilemma” hits Laguna Beach

The US is having a major problem with illegal immigrants which you doubtless already know unless you’ve been stuck on the ISS for the past couple of years. Things have stepped up a couple of degrees with Laguna Beach now taking the tack that their city is allowed to use state land as city property. Think I’m getting carried away with the undocumented immigrant illegal alien criminals and what their supporters are capable of?

Laguna Beach is such a picture-perfect southern California beach town that the youth-oriented television station MTV chose it to stage a reality show with its blond, bronzed and privileged teen set.

But for some grown-up drama, there is Laguna Beach’s day labor center for immigrants, where the deepening division over the tide of illegal workers in the United States is on display.

Opponents, mostly from other Orange County towns, call the center ‘>a magnet for illegal immigrants that encourages more to sneak over the border from Mexico. The anti-immigration Minuteman Project has organized protests at the center and challenged its legality.

Proponents, including the City Council, say it is an exemplary center that concentrates workers in one area on the outskirts of town and eliminates “swarming” where workers gather on residential street corners and surround trucks looking for day labor.

Even those who oppose illegal immigrants turn to the center for their business — a sign that the road to resolving the illegal immigrant problem will be tortuous.

“I don’t think these people should be here because they are illegal, they are breaking the law,” Jeff Hillman said as he picked up a day laborer to dig a hole for $12 an hour, almost twice California’s minimum wage.

The chosen laborer, Marcos Jimenez from Mexico, heard Hillman’s opinion and jumped out of his truck with a slam of the door.

“If he doesn’t want to give work to an illegal immigrant, why doesn’t he go hire a white guy, an American citizen, someone who speaks English better?” Jimenez said in Spanish.

Hillman, who does construction in Laguna Beach, admitted to the contradiction, but said: “The competition is doing it and I need to stay competitive. They do it, so I do it once in a while too.”

No other laborer at the center agreed to work for him that day.

‘LAGUNA WELCOMES SLAVE TRADERS’

On a typical day, some 50 mostly Mexican workers will arrive around 6 a.m., take a number and wait for the pickup trucks to come by seeking labor to work on house construction or maintenance. Around half go home empty-handed.

They say they are treated well, for the most part, and they often get lunch and a bonus for a job well done. Skilled workers can earn up to $150 a day.

“It is part of a system that has been working in this country for 400 years, so you can’t suddenly stop it,” said David Peck, head of the nonprofit group, Cross-Cultural Council, that runs the center with city funding of $20,000 to $30,000 annually and private donations.

“And meanwhile there are 11 million people (nationwide) who are working in the jobs like the ones we are providing.”

Peck is anxious to see Congress enact immigration legislation this year that will help define the immigrants’ place in the United States. Of the two competing bills in Congress, he prays for the failure of the tougher one that would make him a criminal for aiding illegal workers.

But Minuteman member and Laguna Beach resident Eileen Garcia promises to be dogged in her efforts to close down the center, which she says uses scarce city funds needed by legal residents.

Garcia discovered the center was squatting on California state land, but the city council ruled last week that the center could continue to operate on the site for another year while it seeks to acquire the land from the state.
That prompted Garcia and Minuteman leaders to call a protest over the weekend across from the center. As they held up signs saying “Illegal aliens steal American jobs” and “Laguna welcomes slave traders,” the workers and their supporters shouted “Racist, Nazis” in English and Spanish.

Meanwhile, Laguna Beach, a town favored by artists and the gay community for its progressive and tolerant nature, chafes with all the controversy.

“We are just trying to deal pragmatically with the problem a small community faces and this is a solution that works for us,” said City Manager Ken Frank, who estimates 90 percent of residents back the day labor center.

So, let me get this straight. The supporters of these criminals are doing the usual routine of “let’s make up numbers that make it appear that we’ve got huge, overwhelming support for our cause”. In the meantime the city council has the unmitigated gall to appropriate state land for the criminal acts of hiring those who are not paying city, county, state or federal taxes! What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty! Personally I’m hoping that both those who run the center, the city officials who took the hare-brained stand that they could appropriate state land for nefarious purposes and those who hire the criminals are all served with arrest warrents for their activities. Needless to say, I’m also holding out for the forelorn hope that the criminals who are being hired have their butts tossed in prison for, o say, 20 years as felons and they and their family members are tossed out on their butts with no legal chance of re-entering the US.

In the meantime, the members of “La Raza” (translates literally as “the race”) have the unmitigated gall to call those who protest their criminal activity as Nazis as well as “racist”. Obviously these “rocket scientists” doing have any problem doing what they accuse others of and have never heard of Godwin’s Law. Not to mention that the meme of “playing the race card” doesn’t even come into play here. I daresay there’s not an American legal citizen who would have a problem with anyone of any country as long as they are here legally. If, however, someone’s here as a criminal then frack them and whatever coyote they paid to haul their sorry butts into this country.

State Troopers MAY be trained to enforce immigration laws?

I’m not real sure what this article is trying to say…

State troopers may be trained to enforce immigration laws
by The Associated Press

may be trained?? Why, may?

ATLANTA - About a dozen Georgia State Patrol troopers may be trained to enforce immigration laws as the state moves toward putting into place an immigration reform bill signed into law in the spring.

Why only a dozen? Why not ALL of them?

Georgia Department of Public Safety spokesman Gordy Wright tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that troopers who encounter an immigration problem during a traffic stop would have the power to take action.

What kind of action?

An agreement for local officers to enforce federal immigration laws is one of the provisions called for in Senate Bill 529, the Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act sponsored by Senator Chip Rogers — a Republican from Woodstock. Governor Perdue signed the bill into law in April.

Thank you, Sonny! (I think?)

Currently, state troopers are the only law enforcement officers in the state under consideration for the training.

Why only Troopers? Illegals are caught by my city police DAILY!

The commissioner of the Department of Public Safety — Colonel Bill Hitchens — has met with Ken Smith — the special agent in charge of investigations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Atlanta to talk about how troopers would be trained to enforce the laws.

Hitchens would like to start with 12 to 15 troopers statewide in the department’s interdiction unit. Those troopers work drug cases and are equipped with small electronic devices that can translate questions into several languages during a traffic stop, he said.

Can you believe they have to translate traffic stops now? If that doesn’t show you we have an illegal immigration problem, what would?

Rogers hopes other law enforcement agencies will follow suit and ask for training if the program works out well.

The training is paid for with federal dollars.

He hopes it will work well? Well, how hard is it to train Troopers to slap handcuffs on illegals, and throw them on a bus back to Mexico?

…sigh…movin

g on…

Has anyone read, ‘View from the Cop?’ I think Lt. Rose is absolutely hysterical…it’s a must read.

Did everybody vote today??? We did! Make sure to do your civic duty and VOTE!

OH! I did see a LOT of new gang graffiti in Gainesville yesterday, but didn’t get a chance to snap pics - will try and do that soon…

Until next time!

Republicans Preparing to be Traitors

Immigration reform unlikely soon, Bush tells Fox - Yahoo! News:

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - President Bush told Mexican President Vicente Fox the U.S. Congress is unlikely to pass immigration reforms before November congressional elections, Fox said on Monday.

Assuming Fox isn’t telling the biggest whopper he can wrap his lips around, then I can only say I told you so. What I said on 20 JUN 2006 :

Don’t celebrate just yet… pay attention to the wording -

THIS YEAR.

Next year isn’t an election year, is it kiddies? Mark well my words - prepare to be stabbed in the back by the Republican Party once the election is over and your congress-critter is secure in the knowledge he will not have to face your wrath for 2 years, if at all.

They are going to wait until after the elections because they are going to stab us right square in the back. That is the only logical reason for them to hold off. At a time when most polls show 80% of America wanting a “get tough” immigration bill, one would think Congress would fall all over themselves to have it passed and out the door before the election.

One would think it is a virtual guarantee of re-election.

So why would a Congress-critter hold off on passing reform when a solid majority wants it? They are going to stab us in the back, and they know it. They also know you will probably forget all about it by the time re-election pops up in two years.

So, if the Republican Party wants to lose me as a voter, just pull a stunt like amnesty for illegal aliens after the election. Remember, I am going to doubt your commitment until you sign off on my election pledge :

NO AMNESTY.

EVER.

FOR ANY REASON.

AT ANY TIME.

SO HELP ME, GOD.

No pledge, no vote. That’s the bottom line.

Immigration Invasion Billboards raise Controversy

18 07 2006

Cross posted from Morning Coffee

From ABC13.com:

houston.jpg The billboard’s message is simple — ’stop the invasion.’ It’s the controversy surrounding it that is much more complicated.

Inside one Houston factory Mexican music plays in the background. The majority of the workers are Mexican American. Many of them have taken offense to a new billboard just outside their building. It’s one that has caught the attention of those on both sides of the immigration debate. The 14 by 48 foot sign at I-10 and Heights Boulevard reads “Stop the invasion, secure our borders.”

For more on the billboard campaign in Houston and other cities go to grassfire.org

Not only is the billboards message clear but so is the “controversy” surrounding the message crystal clear. Our nation is at war with an enemy that doesn’t use a conventional means of wageing war. Securing our borders is a National Security issue it has absolutely nothing to do with race.

The groups US Border Watch and Grassfire.org paid for the billboard to be put up. Organizers say it’s an effort to inform people the country’s borders have become war zones.

“In the single month of June alone, 254 officers along the Laredo sector of Texas were assaulted,” said Curtis Collier with Border Watch. “That info has to get out. Our sign, links to the website will help get that info to the general public.”

From The Washington Times

For years we have seen individuals enter the country illegally,” said Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr., sheriff of Zapata County. “However, recently we feel that many of these persons are no longer entering the country to look for legitimate employment. We are now seeing that many of these persons are members of ruthless and violent gangs.”
Sheriff Gonzalez’s testimony before the House International Relations subcommittee was part of a series of “field hearings” held across the country to gauge voter opinion on reforming the nation’s immigration laws. Yesterday’s hearing was held in Laredo, in Zapata County.
”Some areas can accurately be described as a war zone,” panel Chairman Ed Royce, California Republican, told The Washington Times after touring the border near Laredo.
Sheriff Gonzalez told members of the subcommittee that the number of illegal aliens from places other than Mexico — including countries on terrorist watch lists — caught crossing the border has more than quintupled in the past four years. Increasingly, he said, they try blending in to look like Mexicans crossing the border in search of honest work.

Curtailing crime is another aspect of securing our borders that those who advance an open border agenda conveniently overlook. During a recent 3 week border security blitz in 5 Texas border couhnties, Val Verde County reported a 76 percent drop in major crimes compared to last year, and one barometer - losses to burglaries - dropped from $91,000 to $1,200 during the intensive law enforcement effort.

Securing our Borders has absolutely nothing to do with Race… It has everything to do with Security.
