Nearly one year ago, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid was polluting the immigration debate by calling a proposal to make English the official language “racist.”

“This amendment is racist. I think it’s directed basically to people who speak Spanish,” the Democrat said during the already tense debate over immigration reform.

However, Reid has not always been so tolerant of Hispanic newcomers.

In fact, in 1993 the unremarkable Harry Reid introduced the ‘Immigration Stabilization Act’ on the floor of the US Senate, and sounded downright intolerant of illegal aliens.

In 1993, illegal aliens were overwhelmingly Hispanic, just as is the case in 2007.

At the time of Reid’s impassioned rant in 1993, America was collapsing under the weight of 3.5 million illegal aliens.

The crisis motivated Reid to declare: “Our borders have overflowed with illegal immigrants placing tremendous burdens on our criminal justice system, schools and social programs.”

“Our federal wallet is stretched to the limit by illegal aliens getting welfare, food stamps, medical care and other benefits often without paying any taxes,” Reid continued.

Now, fast forward to 2006. The illegal alien crisis that ruined Reid’s sleep in 1993 has mushroomed five fold, with 20 million illegal aliens now squatting in America.

And the need to prevent illegal immigration is far greater now than it was in 1993, given the events of 9/11 and the ongoing war on terror.

So why was Reid so gung-ho in 1993, but reduced to race-baiting obstruction in the far more dangerous environment of 2006?

It is the votes stupid!

Harry Reid and the Democrats realize they can no longer win elections by appealing to real American citizens.

They now know that their only hope rests with pandering to 20 million illegal aliens, or “undocumented Democrats,” truth be told.

The liberal motto, then, is as follows: To hell with the best interests of America, the more important objective is having Democrats in power.

If calling a common sense amendment “racist” advances that objective, Reid and the loony left are more than happy to take those cheap political points to the bank–pronto!

Beheadings on the U.S. Border

This is not the first time we have beheaded and mutilated bodies on the United States border and in other Mexican locations. Generally we think of beheading in places like the Middle East, not in our backyard. This is not Islamic terrorists, it’s Mexican drug gangs. This particular man may have been a police officer. Part of this brutality is over ‘billion-dollar smuggling routes into the United States.’

Mexican police found a mutilated, beheaded body dumped outside a military base on the U.S. border …The torso, headless and missing its limbs, was wrapped in a plastic bag and blankets and spotted by passers-by before dawn in the seedy Mexican border city of Tijuana, near San Diego, and not far from a Mexican police anti-drugs squad office.

It was one of the goriest among some 900 gangland-style murders this year by feuding drug cartels.

“An execution of this kind can only be committed by organized crime,” said an official at the Baja California state attorney general’s office. (Reuters)

Areas around Acapulco have seen several reports of brutal beheading and killing. Last year “two police officers’ heads, streaming with blood, were stuck on metal spikes outside a downtown building with a fluorescent cardboard sign. “So that you learn to respect,” it read in thick black letters.” (More at Chicago Tribune)

Fred Burton of Strategic Forecast, has an excellent article, “Mexico: The Price of Peace in the Cartel Wars”:

So far, 2007 has been a bad year for one of Mexico’s two most powerful drug-trafficking enterprises: the Gulf cartel. In January, the organization suffered a major hit when Mexico extradited its captured leader, Osiel Cardenas, to the United States. Then, on April 17, authorities arrested five Gulf members just south of the Texas border in Reynosa. Among those taken into custody was Juan Oscar Garza, purportedly an important Gulf cartel leader in the city. Less than a week later, authorities in Nuevo Laredo captured Gulf cartel leader Eleazar Medina Rojas. The Mexican Attorney General’s office described Medina as “a major killer.”
