American Patriots… We Have Held the Line

8 06 2007

Cross Posted from    The Peoples Patriot

This is a great day for America. For the time being and perhaps much longer, Americans have defeated the illegal alien amnesty legislation known as S.1348. For those of us who truly comprehended what was at stake with this legislation, there were many dark hours of doubt as it seemed that our country was slipping away by the minute.We were pitted against political Goliaths like the United States Chamber of Commerce, La Raza and Maldef. All special interest groups that put their agenda over the best interests of the American people.

All of these groups that supported the bill have tremendous financial and political resources. The odds, my friends, were clearly against us and yet we prevailed. This is a turning point in American politics and the direction of the country in general.

The graphic found in the “About” section of my sidebar is a still from Mel Gibson’s movie the Patriot. I use it on this blog as well as an avatar for the various forums that I post on.

The particular snapshot of the movie, takes place at a battle that clearly turned the tide in the American Revolution. With their backs to wall, and facing tremendous British opposition, the American Patriot’s line was faltering and many decided to retreat. At this point, while many soldiers started running for the rear, Mel Gibson’s character grabs the American Flag and runs to the front of the line yelling “Don’t retreat, hold the line”.

Inspired by his bravado, the American soldiers stop retreating, hold their positions and turn the tide to win the battle and eventually the Revolutionary War. In the movie, British General Cornwallis is forced to surrender at the battle of Yorktown. He says to his aide…

“How could it come to this? An army of rabble, peasants! Everything will change. Everything has changed.”

Like the Continental Army and the Militiamen, we too had our backs against the wall. Defeating amnesty now was a must win situation. Like the brave patriots who fought the Revolutionary War, we too were out manned, out spent and for awhile, out maneuvered.

And like the patriots of yesteryear, when it was most important, we didn’t retreat and we held the line. We won the battle. Now it’s on to win the war.

We must continue to fight to have our borders and laws enforced. We must protect our sovereignty, uphold the Constitution and rule of law. We must vote out those who don’t have the genuine interests of the American people foremost on their minds and in their hearts. We must plug the holes in our immigration laws so that we as a country, are never compromised again.

Let’s enjoy and savor the victory of this one battle in a war that is ongoing. Let us use our momentum to win the war.

I can visualize Bush and “The Masters of the Universe” uttering the same words as Cornwallis did in the movie.

“How could it come to this? An army of rabble, peasants! Everything will change. Everything has changed.”

If you haven’t watched the movie The Patriot, you don’t know what you are missing. It’s a great flick that shines the light on the enormous sacrifices made by our forefathers. It will remind you why we fight for our country here and abroad. To me it’s an inspirational movie. I cannot recommend it enough.

I’ll close this post with a snippet from an email I received from Roy Beck of NumbersUSA this morning.

“While I was writing this tonight, I got a phone call from Ron Maxwell, the Hollywood director/writer/producer of such Civil War movies as “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals.” He had some questions before he sent out an email to his many friends and associates.

He was ecstatic about the results today and wrote about them to his many friends. I thought I would share a few of his thoughts which carry so well the excitement that I’m sure most of us feel.”

“This has been a historic day for America. My faith in our great country has been somewhat restored. It seems that more than a few US Senators from both parties still respect their fellow citizens and have their interest at heart. But most of all, we have seen that the country is not yet a nation of sheep – that citizens who love their country can still rise to the occasion and make their voices heard.”

Indeed!

Thanks to all of you for your hard work and dedication to the worthiest of causes, saving our nation.

THE SENATE IMMIGRATION BILL IS DEAD!!!!!!

**COALITION AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION**

The following is a message from Rev. Brian Bonner D.D., the founder of the CAII:

I want to thank all of you for your hard work. your efforts, along with those of groups like Numbersusa, Alipac and others helped kill this horrendous bill. You do not compromise on national sovereignty. We continue to fight however, but take some time to enjoy your victory; I know I will. Frankly, I am exhausted and I hope for some time for a break. We will send out a list soon on who to thank for their votes and who to let know you are unhappy, but right now Pop the cork folks!

From GACW…Thank you to everyone, especially those in the CAII and Protect Our Border Now groups who called, faxed, yelled, and screamed in the name of national sovereignty. This battle is won, but the fight continues – from the city to the national levels – American citizens will begin fighting for the enforcement of their current immigration laws. Rest up, because next week we start again!

Senate Bill 1348 Defeated

8 06 2007

Well, I can rest a bit now. The immigration bill has been defeated. This is not over by a long shot, but we can all breathe a bit for a while. I want to thank everyone who hounded their elected cockroaches over this issue for saving our country. I am personally exhausted, but, of course, I will still be doing my radio show tonight.I am sorry I did not inform you immediately, but it was late and we celebrated after the failed cloture vote!

TEDDY AT THE BAT The Outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Cloture nine that day…….

8 06 2007

Cross posted from StikNstein…has no mercy

Sorry legislation pandering to a few special interests passes the Senate all the time. Why? Because it only has an impact on a few folks so no Senator has to stand up and defend it.

The failure of S.1348 was because it was sorry legislation. Once it was shown to be just that, the players on the supporting team wouldn’t step up to the plate. They appeared to go down swinging…..but they really threw the game.

S.1348 was not written to solve the problems we face. It WAS written to make the folks who have been benefiting from illegal immigration happy. The Chamber of Commerce, Latino Special Interest Groups, The Catholic Church, illegal immigrants themselves, and the Country who encourages them to cross our borders…Mexico. Chertoff was right when he said this was the “sweet spot”….it was the sweet spot for all these groups.
The group most hurt by illegal immigration (the American People) were left out of the sweet spot.
Everybody involved in the process knew this.

Why else would you have to write it behind closed doors, then attempt to jam it through the Senate while the ink on the final draft was still wet. It was crap..and anyone who read it realized it was crap.
When a few Republicans attempted to fix it, the crafters realizing they they were busted, either had to defend it…. or allow changes that would make those in the “sweet spot” angry.
So, rather than make it into real reform, they chose to let it die…… for now.

It shows, that a few folks with bright lights, are good for legislation.

A great Recap of the voting can be found at….Bear Creek Ledger

TEDDY AT THE BAT

tedo.bmp

The Outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Cloture nine that day:
The score stood 66 to 33, with but two cloture votes to play.
And then when McCain died at first, and Spector looked right ill,
A sickly silence fell upon the supporters of the Bill.

A straggling few got up to caucus in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, if only Ted could get but a whack at that -
We’d put up even money, now, with Teddy at the bat.

But Lindsay preceded Teddy, as did also Hagel.,
And the former was a lulu and the latter was a bagel;
So upon the Bill supporters grim melancholy sat,
For there seemed but little chance of Teddy getting to the bat.

But Lindsay driveled out some BS, arm twisting a couple of votes,
And Hagel, the much despis-ed, was firing off ‘you owe me’ notes;
And when the dust had lifted, and the clerk saw what had occurred,
There was Chuck safe at second and Lindsay hugging third.

Then from 12,000,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through sanctuary city, and rattled the Liberty Bell;
It knocked upon the Border and recoiled upon the Hill,
For Teddy, Liberal Teddy, was advancing with the Bill.

There was ease in Teddy’s manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Teddy’s bearing and a smile on Teddy’s face.
And when, responding to the jeers, he lightly doffed his hat,
Even the Decider, hidden in the crowd, smiled, ’twas Teddy at the bat.

Twelve million illegal eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;
Big Business sure applauded when he wiped them on his shirt.
Then while the opposition ground the ball into their hip,
Defiance gleamed in Teddy’s eye, a sneer curled Teddy’s lip.

And now the first Cloture vote came hurtling through the air,
And Teddy stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the great compromiser the ball unheeded sped-
“That ain’t my style,” said Teddy. “Strike one,” the American said.

From the benches, full of businessmen, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating down of wages on a stern and distant shore.
“Screw him! Screw the American!” shouted the Chamber of Commerce in the stand;
And its likely they’d a-outsourced him had not Teddy raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian Amnesty great Teddy’s visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the vote go on;
He signaled to the Senate, and once more the Cloture flew;
But Teddy still ignored it, and Americans said, “Strike two.”

“Fraud!” cried the Catholic League, and the ACLU answered fraud;
But one scornful look from Teddy and the Special Interests were awed.
They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that Teddy wouldn’t let that bill go by again.

The sneer is gone from Teddy’s lip, his teeth are clenched in hate;
He pounds with cruel violence his gavel upon the plate.
And now the Senate holds the ball, and now they let it go,
And now the air is shattered by the force of Teddy’s blow.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and American hearts are light,
And somewhere citizens are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Washington – mighty Teddy has struck out.

Recap of cloture vote for S.1348 last night

8 06 2007

Cross posted from   Bear Creek Ledger

The fight is won at the moment.  By no means do I believe it’s over.  But today is a good day for the United States of America!

Information from Roy Beck at Numbers USA:

You sent more than 750,000 faxes through NumbersUSA in May alone, and more than 100,000 faxes just since our Virtual Rally Conference Call with thousands of you Wednesday afternoon! And your tens of thousands of phone calls the last two weeks have created a firestorm that the majority of Senators simply didn’t want to face.Tonight, 12 Senators from the Democratic side of the aisle joined us in opposing the amnesty and huge increase in foreign workers:

Baucus (D-Mont.)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-Calif.)
Byrd (D-WV)
Dorgan (D-ND)
* Landrieu (D-La.)
McCaskill (D-Mo.)
* Pryor (D-Ark.)
* Rockefeller(D-WV)
Sanders (I-Vt.)
Tester (D-Mont.)
Webb (D-Va.)

Interestingly, Landrieu, Pryor and Rockefeller are up for re-election next year.

McCaskill, Tester and Webb unseated incumbent Republicans last year while promising to oppose amnesties. They upheld their promises tonight.

Bingaman, Boxer and Sanders are the surprises here. We will be interested in learning more about how they happened to end up on our side when they generally are so bad on our issues.

Of course, Dorgan and Byrd have been two of our staunchest allies for some time.

In those states, you will want to give as much positive reinforcement as possible. Let’s hold onto these Senators for future votes.

Two major disappointments on the Democratic side were:

Nelson (D-Neb.)
Stabenow (D-Mich.)

Last year when they were running for re-election, they voted AGAINST the amnesty bill, surely sensing what most voters wanted them to do.

Their support FOR the amnesty tonight raises serious questions about the integrity of their re-election campaigns.

REDUCE REPUBLICAN AMNESTY SUPPORT

We had said that we had to limit Republican supporters of the Bush/Kennedy Comprehensive Amnesty bill to no more than 15, even though 27 of the sitting Republicans voted FOR cloture to allow last year’s amnesty to pass..

Thanks to your incredible pressure on these Republicans, only 7 of those 27 ended up voting for the amnesty cloture tonight:

THE SELLOUT SEVEN
* Graham (R-SC)
* Hagel (R-Neb.)
Lugar (R-Ind.)
Martinez (R-Fla.)
McCain (R-Ariz.)
Specter (R-Pa.)
Voinovich (R-Ohio)

Although the Republican President devoted huge amounts of time from his top officials to getting this amnesty passed, only these seven Republicans stood with Pres. Bush tonight.

I hope that those of you in those states will pour on a huge amount of criticism, even if you think these Senators are hopeless sentimentalists for open borders.

The really exciting news from tonight was the list of 19 Republicans who voted AGAINST cloture even though they voted for it on last year’s amnesty.

Some of these Senators had some pretty lousy votes on amendments the last two weeks, but in the end they did the right thing and voted to effectively kill the bill tonight:

SWITCHED FROM BAD TO GOOD

* Alexander (R-TN) [Lamar does not believe this bill was amnesty - he is running for re-election in 2008. He needs to be gone from the Senate]
Bennett (R-UT)
* Cochran (R-MS)
* Coleman (R-MN)
* Collins (R-ME)
* Cornyn (R-TX)
* Craig (R-ID)
* Domenici (R-NM)
Gregg (R-NH)
Hatch (R-UT)
Hutchison (R-TX)
Kyl (R-AZ)
Lott (R-MS)
* McConnell (R-KY)
Murkowski (R-AK)
* Smith (R-OR)
Snowe (R-ME)
Stevens (R-AK)
* Warner (R-VA)

HOLD ANTI-AMNESTY REPUBLICANS FROM LAST YEAR

Perhaps the hardest was to hold on to all 19 Republicans who voted AGAINST cloture on last year’s amnesty and who are still in Congress.

Several of these had been strongly indicating their interest in supporting Pres. Bush’s and Sen. McCain’s amnesty efforts, despite being so strong against amnesty last year — and despite some of them running for re-election last year on a claim of being anti-amnesty.

Particularly rewarding tonight was to see Georgia’s two Senators and Arizona’s Sen. Kyl voting against the amnesty bill that they had championed after being part of closed-door negotiations that created it. We had told you in Georgia and Arizona that if you could turn these three back to the right path, we would have a chance to beat this bill.

VOTED AGAINST AMNESTY LAST YEAR & THIS YEAR
* Allard (R-CO)
Bond (R-MO)
Bunning (R-KY)
Burr (R-NC)
* Chambliss (R-GA)
Coburn (R-OK)
Crapo (R-ID)
DeMint (R-SC)
Dole (R-NC)
Ensign (R-NV)
Grassley (R-IA)
Inhofe (R-OK)
Isakson (R-GA)
Roberts (R-KS)
* Sessions (R-AL)
Shelby (R-AL)
* Sununu (R-NH)
Thune (R-SD)
Vitter (R-LA)

In addition, the one new Republican Senator, Corker of Tennessee, lived up to his campaign promise to oppose amnesties.

Two Republican Senators who voted against last year’s amnesty weren’t available to vote tonight: Coburn (R-OK) and Enzi (R-Wyo.).

And Sen. Brownback (R-Kan.) — who supported amnesty last year but has backed away some from that stance as he runs for President — also missed the vote. [Brownback believes this bill is not amnesty and if not for his running for President I believe he would have voted for cloture. He is no better than McCain or President Bush on this issue.]

WHAT’S NEXT?

Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) sounded mighty discouraged after losing the cloture vote 45-50 tonight. If we are lucky, he won’t try again this year to pass the Bush/Kennedy Comprehensive Amnesty Bill.

He had earlier promised to hold the Senators at work late into the night Friday and even into Saturday if needed to get S. 1348 passed.

But when he got only 45 of the 60 votes needed to stop debate and allow a final vote on the bill, he sent the Senators home for a long weekend and has set other issues for consideration next Monday.

There were lots of scary speeches after the vote tonight, with Senators talking about their insistence that the bill be brought up again in some other form. But it sounded like bluster.

Nonetheless, we will be vigilant and let you know if anything is on the horizon.

In the meantime, our best hope this year is that the Administration can be pushed to continue to increase enforcement while local governments do the same so that more and more illegal aliens leave the country on their own.

And there is a remote possibility that Congress might pass some smaller bills that strengthen enforcement.

DON’T LET THE AMNESTY DEMOCRATS OFF THE HOOK

We are going to have to watch this Senate, I do believe they will try to include some of the provisions of this bill in other bills by tucking them in nonrelated bills and thus slipping them by. Do not believe that the fight is over.

We need to continue to put pressure on Senators and Representatives.  ICE and the Department of Homeland Security needs to start to enforce the laws on the books now.  DHS needs to build the fence the Senate voted for in 2006.
