**PERSONAL STORY**

TBG to Interpreter:

(English) So, are you ready for the meeting today?

Interpreter to TBG:

(English) The question is; are you ready for me?

(Spanish) firme esta hoja

TBG to Interpreter:

[After being handed a piece of paper in Spanish] (English) I don’t understand?

Interpreter to TBG:

(English) It’s in Spanish; it doesn’t matter.

Hispanic mother to TBG:

(Broken English) Sign…Baby.

It’s at that point I realize that a presumed illegal alien parent, most likely from Mexico-had to tell ME…an American, English-speaking citizen…how to sign into our parent-teacher meeting today.

The lanyard hanging from the interpreters neck catches my eye; PUERTO RICO is written in bold, red and green letters that are nestled between images of foreign flags.

I look around the room at all the unfamiliar faces.

Fluent Spanish fills the air; my attention shifts from a rumbling dialect I don’t understand to thoughts of how a north Georgia town is quickly morphing into a place I no longer recognize.

I’m sad that my child will never know how great she was…

Lack of U.S. immigration reform forcing states to act , study says

Earlier this year, Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue signed into law one of the toughest immigration bills in the country. The new law requires adults to prove they are in the country legally when they seek many state-administered benefits and penalizes companies for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.

**YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK**

Did you know…

  • Criminal aliens incarcerated in the U.S. increased from approximately 42,000 (2001) to 49,000 by (2004)?
  • In 2004, the majority of these criminal aliens were citizens of Mexico?
  • The cost of incarcerating these illegal aliens from 2001 to 2004 cost U.S. taxpayers $5.8 BILLION dollars?

What’s even worse; is that your Federal Government knows it and has done nothing about it.
