Comprehensive Shamnesty

With the Democratic majority in both the House and Senate Shamnesty may become a reality.  I hope I am wrong… it has happened before once or twice…  It seems as though politicians feel the best way to fight crime is to eliminate the laws… No Laws no Criminals…

Conditions are ripe for immigration reform

President Bush, trotting out his latest domestic initiatives during last week’s State of the Union address, renewed the push for an immigration overhaul.

Here is where Bush may have his best chance for success across the partisan divide, and he deserves credit for once again bringing the issue to the forefront.

Bush called on Congress to pass comprehensive reform. Addressing the problem of illegal immigration and “delivering a secure, productive, orderly and fair system” is a must, he said.

Bush faces opposition from Republicans such as Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, who view reform proposals as rewarding illegal immigration with amnesty.

Citizenship paths may stall immigration overhaul

With a new Democratic-controlled Congress and a president newly committed to bipartisan accomplishments, prospects for an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws have never seemed brighter.

But reform efforts could stumble over the stickiest issue: how to craft a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants that will win the support of lawmakers who draw the line at “amnesty.”

In the House, where these conservatives could derail a bill, the job of finding that middle ground falls to Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., who heads the immigration subcommittee.

And the Minot Daily News offers an article that in the Last paragraph said it better than I ever could have..

Clearly, action needs to be taken concerning immigration reform. But it should not be a vote for failure, in effect granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants who continue to thumb their noses at our laws, then have the audacity to seek amnesty. Instead, lawmakers should enact reforms intended to make our borders more secure.

Unfortunately with the Shamnesty proponents in the House, Senate and the White House odds are that some form of Immigration Reform that includes Amnesty for the 12 million criminals here illegally will be enacted.
