Almost half of uninsured in America illegal aliens

Poverty is down and median income is up, according to just released census figures 2006, Current Population Survey. (pdf) Reporting: Molly Henneberg, Fox News Channel.

2006: number of uninsured in America 47 million people, or 15.8% of the population.2005: number of uninsured in America 44.8 million people, or 15.3% of the population.

Joseph Antos, American Enterprise Institute, looks inside the numbers, because they are very misleading.

Broken down by legal vs. illegal uninsured who are NOT U.S. CITIZENS IS 45% of the 47 million.Broken down by age, 18 – 24 years old – 29.3% of the 47 million.

25 – 35 years old – 26.9% of the 47 million.

Broken down by salary, $75,000 or more per year – 8.5% of the 47 million.

Did you get that? Almost half of the uninsured in America are ILLEGAL ALIENS. Think what a financial break to our hospitals and doctors it would be, if the illegals were not here. Just a thought.

Also if you do the math 45% (illegal aliens) of 47 million is over 20 million illegal aliens inside the United States. Fact.

Immigration Raid in Cincinnati Nets 200 Illegal Immigrants

29 08 2007

Cross posted from The Virtuous Republic

An immigration raid, at a chicken processing plant, just north of Cincinnati rounded up 200 illegal aliens according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. In addition to the raid in Fairfield, ICE served search warrants at the home offices of Koch Foods in Chicago.

Immigration agents raided a poultry packaging facility in Fairfield early today and arrested as many as 200 illegal immigrants who were working there.

The raid, one of the largest of its kind this year in Greater Cincinnati, is part of a two-year investigation into the hiring practices at the Chicago-based Koch Foods Company.

The Fairfield processing facility is located at 4100 Port Union Road in Fairfield.

Immigration officials described Koch Foods as an “egregious violator” of U.S. immigration laws, which means the company is suspected of knowingly hiring undocumented workers.

Brian Moskowitz, a special agent in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for Ohio and Michigan, said agents arrived with search warrants today and seized documents and other materials that could be used to build a criminal case against company officials. Search warrants also were served today at the company’s Chicago offices.

Congratulations to ICE and Bulter County officials for conducting this raid. Right now, this nation is suffering because for years our elected officials have refused to guard the border and enforce our immigration laws. Finally due to pressure from ordinary Americans, our government, rather grudgingly, is starting to attack the problem of illegal immigration.

Additionally, the other part of the equation is a corporate culture of corruption. Our CEO’s knowingly approve the hiring of illegal aliens to keep costs down, improve profits and ultimately line their own pockets with bonuses. But what is the cost of this corporate corruption? Local wages are depressed, local governments are saddled with the burden of providing education and medical benefits for illegals. And because of companies like Koch, our country keeps attracting illegal aliens who have no interest in becoming Americans. Illegal aliens only do the jobs at wages Americans will not accept.

Arizona’s New Hiring Laws are Already Working

29 08 2007

Cross posted from   The Virtuous Republic

The Arizona Republic describes the effect the state’s “impending” new law requiring employers to verify the immigration status of employees has on illegal immigrants.

It’s impossible to count how many undocumented immigrants have fled because of the new law. But based on interviews with undocumented immigrants, immigrant advocates, community leaders and real-estate agents, at least several hundred have left since Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano signed the bill on July 2. There are an estimated 500,000 illegal immigrants in Arizona.

Some are moving to other states, where they think they will have an easier time getting jobs. Others are returning to Mexico, selling their effects and putting their houses on the market.

The number departing is expected to mushroom as the Jan. 1 deadline draws closer. After that, the law will require employers to verify the employment eligibility of their workers through a federal database.

“I would say we are losing at least 100 people a day,” said Elias Bermudez, founder of Immigrants Without Borders and host of a daily talk-radio program aimed at undocumented immigrants.

Immigration hard-liners say the exodus is a sign the employer-sanctions law is working, even before it becomes official. The law is aimed at shutting off the job magnet by imposing harsh penalties on employers caught knowingly hiring unauthorized workers. Violators face a 10-day suspension of their business license for a first offense and could lose their license for a second offense.

“This is exactly what it is supposed to do. (Illegal immigrants) have no business being here, none,” said Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, the main architect of the employer-sanctions law. “Shut off the lights, and the crowd will go home. I hope they will all self-deport.” Read the rest here….

The experiment in Arizona, which hasn’t even really started yet, shows that the enforcement of our current laws in combination with taking away the lure for illegal aliens, i.e., jobs, works. The program hasn’t even started, and illegal immigrants are beginning to move on to greener pastures or as the story notes, return to Mexico.

Of course those states without a law like Arizona will have to quickly adopt such a measure or they will be inundated with illegal immigrants.

If you read the rest of the article, you will see that the usual suspects on the left are already declaring Arizona’s economy will implode without illegal immigrant labor. Marxists and their ilk, who have no respect for our borders, obviously don’t understand the free market. Illegal labor itself has been distorting the market by allow employers to pay substandard wages for certain classes of jobs. To attract legal labor, individuals and businesses (who were breaking the law in the first place) will have to now pay prevailing wages. Some prices may go up and some people may do without some services like child or lawn care. So be it.

In the long run, the market will adjust and Arizona will see several benefits as social services, schools, hospitals, and police departments will require fewer tax dollars as they will no longer have to deal with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.

Edwards’s poverty “plague” examined

28 08 2007

The Census Bureau will release its annual report on poverty in America tomorrow. The report will show, as it has in the past that around 37 million people live in “official poverty”. Presidential candidate John Edwards, who is running on the concept of the “Two Americas”, the haves and have nots, will, no doubt try to exploit this report for his own political ambitions.

From The National Review:

In the past, Edwards has claimed that poverty in America is a “plague” which forces 37 million Americans to live in “terrible” circumstances. According to Edwards, an amazing “one in eight” Americans lack “enough money for the food, shelter, and clothing they need,” caught in a daily “struggle with incredible poverty.”

However, examination of the living standards of the 37 million or so persons, the government defines as “poor,” reveals that America’s poverty “plague” may not be as “terrible” or “incredible” as anti-poverty crusader Edwards contends.

If being “poor” means (as Edwards claims it does) a lack of nutritious food, adequate warm housing, and clothing for a family, then very few of America’s 37 million official “poor” people can be regarded as actually poor. Some material hardship does exist in the United States, but, in reality, it is quite restricted in scope and severity.

The following are facts about persons defined as “poor” by the Census Bureau, taken from a variety of government reports:

46 percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.

80 percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, in 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.

Only six percent of poor households are overcrowded; two thirds have more than two rooms per person.

The typical poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

Nearly three quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars.

97 percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.

78 percent have a VCR or DVD player.

62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

89 percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a more than a third have an automatic dishwasher.

As a group, America’s poor are far from being chronically undernourished. The average consumption of protein, vitamins, and minerals is virtually the same for poor and middle-class children and, in most cases, is well above recommended norms. Poor children actually consume more meat than do higher-income children and have average protein intakes 100-percent above recommended levels. Most poor children today are, in fact, super-nourished and grow up to be, on average, one inch taller and ten pounds heavier than the GIs who stormed the beaches of Normandy in World War II.

While the poor are generally well-nourished, some poor families do experience temporary food shortages. But, even this condition is relatively rare; 89 percent of the poor report their families have “enough” food to eat, while only two percent say they “often” do not have enough to eat.

Overall, the typical American defined as poor by the government has a car, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a stove, a clothes washer and dryer, and a microwave. He has two color televisions, cable or satellite TV reception, a VCR, or DVD player, and a stereo. He is able to obtain medical care. His home is in good repair and is not overcrowded. By his own report, his family is not hungry, and he had sufficient funds in the past year to meet his family’s essential needs. While this individual’s life is not opulent, it is far from the popular images of dire poverty conveyed by the press, liberal activists, and politicians.

Wow, that sounds terrible! Those poor people! Imagine being forced to live in a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio? 97 percent of “poor people” have color tvs and more than half two or more? Oh, the horror! We have got to save these people from this life!

I keep saying poverty is relative and there is no true poverty in this country. We have got to be the only country in the world who have fat homeless people.

Much official poverty that does exist in the United States can be reduced, particularly among children. There are two main reasons that American children are poor: Their parents don’t work much, and their fathers are absent from the home.

In both good and bad economic environments, the typical American poor family with children is supported by only 800 hours of work during a year — the equivalent of 16 hours of work per week. If work in each family were raised to 2,000 hours per year — the equivalent of one adult working 40 hours per week throughout the year — nearly 75 percent of poor children would be lifted out of official poverty.

As noted above, father absence is another major cause of child poverty. Nearly two thirds of poor children reside in single-parent homes; each year, an additional 1.5 million children are born out of wedlock. If poor mothers married the fathers of their children, nearly three quarters of the nation’s impoverished youth would immediately be lifted out of poverty.

Yet, although work and marriage are reliable ladders out of poverty, the welfare system perversely remains hostile to both. Major programs such as food stamps, public housing, and Medicaid continue to reward idleness and penalize marriage. If welfare could be turned around to encourage work and marriage, the nation’s remaining poverty could be reduced.

Now this guy is just being plain mean. How dare he say people should get married, raise their children and work hard? He must be some crazy conservative.

Another important factor boosting poverty in the U.S. is our broken immigration system which imports hundreds of thousands of additional poor people each year from abroad through both legal and illegal immigration channels. One quarter of all poor persons in the U.S. are now first generation immigrants or the minor children of those immigrants. Roughly one in ten of the persons counted among the poor by Census is either an illegal immigrant or the minor child of an illegal. Immigrants tend to be poor because they have very low education levels. A quarter of legal immigrants and fifty to sixty percent of illegals are high-school dropouts. By contrast, only nine percent of non-immigrant Americans lack a high school degree.

As long as the present steady flow of poverty-prone persons from foreign countries continues, efforts to reduce the total number of poor in the U.S. will be far more difficult. A sound anti-poverty strategy must not only seek to increase work and marriage among native born Americans, it must also end illegal immigration, and dramatically increase the skill level of future legal immigrants.

Oh, now he has definitely gone too far! How dare he point ou that we are importing poverty?? How dare he bemoan the hard working immigrants, legal and illegal aliens? This guy is obviously a racist who hates immigrants! We have got to demand he be fired immediately for expressing these ideas!

It is time to wake up to the FACTS in life and stop dreaming of utopia and communism. We have got to secure our borders and get rid of the illegal aliens. We cannot and should not import the worlds poor. For those of you that think we should, stop complaining there are poor people in our country; you want them here!

A country is not a country without borders. We must control our immigration and only allow immigrants that can contribute to our country, not live off it and bring it down.

Arsonist – Another job Americans won’t do?

27 08 2007

Cross posted from   Bear Creek Ledger

An illegal alien set fire to a hotel in Chattanooga, Tn on August 14th and finally we see a judge with a modicum of common sense.

Judge Tells Illegal Alien He is “Unwelcome Undesirable”

General Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon said the man charged with setting a fire in a downtown hotel is “an unwelcome undesirable” illegal alien.Judge Moon told Bario Gomez, “Undesirables like you are not welcome in this country. You are a Latino terrorist who entered this country illegally and soon plotted significant personal injury and damage to the people and businesses in our community.”

Authorities said Gomez is an illegal alien with no proof of identification. Officials also said he gave police a false name.

The INS [edit: should be ICE!] placed a hold on Gomez, 20, after charges of aggravated arson and aggravated vandalism were filed against him.

Judge Moon told him, “It is undesirables like you who create many unjustifiable problems and prejudices upon the good people who enter this country legally in chasing a dream for a better life for themselves and their families.

“Mr. Gomez, you nor any other citizen from a foreign land has a right to enter this country; you simply have a privilege to enter this country through the proper legal channels.

“You are a domestic terrorist who is an imminent threat to the safety of our people and their property. You are also a supreme flight risk from justice. It is with duty, comfort and ease that I increase your bond significantly in an appropriate amount to insure your appearance in further proceedings and to insure the safety of this community.”

The bond was raised from $30,000 to $1 million. The previous bond was set by Magistrate James Purple, which Judge Moon described as “another ludicrously low bond.”

I’m sure the ACLU and La Raza will disagree with Judge Moon and say this was just a hard working “undocumented” immigrant doing the job Americans won’t do.  Judge Moon is just being a racist and nativist.

Let’s see now we can arsonist to the growing list of jobs like child rapist, child molester, rapist, drunk driving, vehicular manslaughter, illegal drug seller, gang banger and just plain old murderer.

Mexican Officials Help to Smuggle People Across the U.S. Border

27 08 2007

Cross posted from   The Virtuous Republic

At least these Mexican officials were getting paid to smuggle illegals into the United States. Our officials, federal and local, do for free what lesser men like these charge for.

The Mexican Attorney General’s office announced Thursday the arrest of two immigration officials suspected of using their positions to lead an illegal human trafficking ring.

Along with the suspects, police on Monday seized five luxury vehicles, seven firearms — four of which are illegal — migration documents, U.S. visas, passports and other illegal documents, authorities said in a news release. The goods have an estimated value of $850,000 .

The two suspects, identified as Oscar Manuel Navarrete Orozco and Maria America Maldonado, worked for the National Immigration Institute in the state of Guanajuato, 200 miles northeast of Mexico City. They face charges of organized crime, trafficking of undocumented persons and running operations with illegally obtained resources.

Illegal migration is one of Mexico’s most serious problems. Statistics from the immigration institute indicate that more than 182,000 undocumented migrants were detained in Mexico in 2006. The vast majority were Central Americans from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador en route to the United States.

Some Just Don’t Get It: Census Bureau Asks That Immigration Raids Be Halted

27 08 2007

Cross posted from   The Virtuous Republic

Did you hear this one? The Census Bureau asked ICE to suspend immigration raids during the 2010 census so as not to scare illegal aliens. This is the mindset that proponents of secured borders have to battle. At least ICE said no.

Census officials had planned to speak with immigration agents about curbing enforcement during the population count, the Census Bureau’s second-ranking official said in an interview earlier this week.

Raids during the population count would make an already distrustful group even less likely to cooperate with government workers who are supposed to include them in the headcount, Deputy Director Preston Jay Waite had said.

When asked Thursday if the immigration enforcement agency would consider suspending raids during the census, spokeswoman Pat Reilly said, “If we were, we wouldn’t talk about it.”

“We’re an investigative agency,” she added. “We don’t talk about how we target our enforcement activities.”

The Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count everyone, including illegal immigrants, in the census.

Immigration agents informally agreed to cooperate with the Census Bureau during the 2000 census by not conducting any large-scale raids, said Waite and Kenneth Prewitt, who directed the Census Bureau during the 2000 count.

Public discussion about possibly repeating the policy in 2010 knocked the Bush administration off message a week after two members of the president’s Cabinet announced stepped-up efforts to enforce the nation’s immigration laws.

Nantel said she wanted to clarify the enforcement agency’s position.

“I don’t want there to be any question in the American people’s mind as to whether or not ICE would suspend enforcement efforts,” Nantel said. “The answer to that is emphatically no.”
