US Bridge Safety & Illegal Aliens

From Debbie at Right Truth we find out a subcontractor providing rebar installation for major bridge projects in Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee used illegal aliens who did not have valid welding certifications.  Are these welding jobs the jobs Americans won’t do that the pro-illegal immigrationists are always mentioning?

Talk about public safety!  I just wonder what other possible areas there are unqualified illegal aliens working on infrastructure projects?

The good thing is that the owner of this company was arrested by ICE on Thursday.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Jose S. Gonzalez, 32, at his office in Greenville Thursday, according to a news release. Tarrasco Steel was hired as a subcontractor for rebar installation services to major bridge projects in Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee. The federal government considers those bridges as critical infrastructure, and they were part of routine inspections of facilities that if damaged could pose a threat to national security and public safety.”There is a serious public safety concern when illegal aliens, who are not authorized to work in the country legally, and who do not possess valid welding certifications, are employed in the construction of bridges in our communities,” said Michael A. Holt, special agent in charge of the Customs Office of Investigations in New Orleans, in a news release.

BTW – Tarrasco Steel worked on an I-40 project in Memphis.

Steel firm owner jailed — Illegal aliens had bogus SS numbers. via The Sun Herald, hat tip Mary Chamberlain:

The owner of Tarrasco Steel, a company that supplied workers on the Biloxi Bay Bridge, was arrested and charged with hiring illegal immigrants on projects in three states. Some had improper welding certification.U.S. The federal government considers those bridges as critical infrastructure, and they were part of routine inspections of facilities that if damaged could pose a threat to national security and public safety.

“There is a serious public safety concern when illegal aliens, who are not authorized to work in the country legally, and who do not possess valid welding certifications, are employed in the construction of bridges in our communities,” said Michael A. Holt, special agent in charge of the Customs Office of Investigations in New Orleans, in a news release.

On inspections of several construction sites March 29, representatives of several federal agencies confirmed the majority of Tarrasco Steel employees were using bogus Social Security numbers, and 77 immigrants were arrested. Twenty-six of them worked for Tarrasco Steel. Some of them worked on the Biloxi bridge, the Huey P. Long bridge in New Orleans, and a project on Interstate 40 in Memphis, among others, the news release said.

In April, nine Tarrasco employees caught in the March 29 operations were charged with fraudulent use of immigration documents and Social Security account numbers. Investigators served a search warrant at the Tarrasco office in Greenville and they got copies of payroll records. They allege Gonzalez falsified information on the I-9 Employee Eligibility forms. Investigators learned that several workers had inappropriate welding certifications.

Several South Mississippi law enforcement agencies participated in the investigation, including the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Biloxi Police Department.

Gonzalez was indicted on July 29 and $457,368 has been seized from Tarrasco accounts, the news release said. –By MICHAEL NEWSOM

Two Examples of Why We Need to Secure Our Southern Border

6 08 2007

Crimes committed by illegal aliens are crimes, that for the most part, that are almost entirely preventable. The problem is that our elites support cheap labor. Unfortunately, that lust for low paid help means that your life and liberty and property are not being protected. Our open borders even allow those that we have previously deported to come back to the U.S. and some of them commit more crimes.

The Las Cruces Sun-News in New Mexico relays the following story:

DEMING Customs and Border Patrol agents apprehended a previously deported sex offender Monday night in Deming, according to a news release.

Servando Valenzuela-Corchado, 27, of Mexico was stopped by the agents at a local motel in Deming. Criminal background checks revealed his previous conviction on charges of “sexual contact/no consent,” the release stated.

In July 2005, Valenzuela-Corchado pleaded guilty to the charge and served six months in jail in Boulder, Colo., according to the release. Since the offense was a crime involving moral turpitude, he was deported from the United States upon his release from jail.

Valenzuela-Corchado was being detained at the Luna County Detention Facility and will face felony charges for re-entry into the United States. His formal removal from the United States will be reinstated after he serves a jail sentence for felony re-entry and is returned to Mexico.

From Indiana, we get this story of a previous deported criminal who came back and committed another crime.

A Mexican national living in Indiana who has repeatedly returned to the United States after being deported will serve 62 months in prison for illegally re-entering the United States.

That prison time will come on top of time Juan Mata-Talavera, 37, is serving for a felony battery conviction, Justice Department officials said Monday.

Mata-Talavera pleaded guilty Friday to re-entry by an illegal immigrant after previously being deported, only to return to the U.S. and commit felony battery.

Mata-Talavera was convicted of battery in 1998, which under immigration law meant he could never return to the United States without permission.

But later that year, he returned to the United States without permission and was deported in 1998 and again in 1999.

He came back to Indiana once again and was convicted on a felony battery charge in 2005. He is serving a four-year sentence in the Indiana Department of Correction for that conviction.

Calling for the securing of our southern border isn’t a political slogan. It is a common sense realization that we need a fences, vehicle barriers, boots on the ground, sensors, and drones to stop undesirable people from entering our country and committing crimes. Deportation is only one part of the solution. Keeping those already deported out of our nation is another part of the equation that our government is only now grudgingly acknowledging as more Americans call for border security.
